When someone treats you hot & cold, uses scarcity tactics, breadcrumbs you, and/ or uses intermittent reinforcement? They are manipulating you. These methods are used to withhold attention, affection, and emotional connection to heighten one’s perceived "superiority and sense of control." Highly manipulative people use this dysfunctional maladaptive behavior as a tool to create anxiety, discomfort, and to keep the other person off balance. When you become aware of this dynamic in a relationship, whether it's with a partner, family member, or a friend, and FINALLY go cold, and begin to limit their access to you? Inevitably their response it is: "Wait, wait, wtf just happened? Why isn't this person available to me anymore? Why aren't they doing what I'm demanding anymore? Why aren't they responding anymore? Where they at tho?" The thing is, when they treat people like vending machines - putting in tiny coins of warmth and attention in after weeks, months, years of disinterest and rejection? It absolutely NEVER fails, they STILL somehow expect that you'll to just spit out ALL THE ATTENTION, LOVE, and WARMTH right back out like it's your literal job. Like it's already been bought and paid for and you OWE them. And for the people who have removed themselves from some of these toxic people like I have, good for you! NEWSFLASH: You're not a vending machine. Entitled, manipulative people will take and take until you stop them. And their attempts to shame/ guilt you and their tears or rage are just more manipulations designed to regain control and punish you for ever standing up for yourself.
