In 2020, Oreo launched a marketing campaign centered around a real “Doomsday Vault” built in Norway. The structure was installed near the Svalbard Global Seed Vault — a secure facility designed to preserve crop seeds in case of global catastrophe. Oreo’s version stored cookies and the Oreo recipe, packaged in protective materials meant to withstand extreme conditions. The campaign was timed around public discussion of asteroid 2018 VP1, which had a small chance of entering Earth’s atmosphere in November 2020. While the vault was real, it was primarily a promotional stunt rather than a permanent global preservation facility. Infertility means that you’re frantically looking at the calendar + your cycle + wondering when or if you’re going to be able to have a baby this year. And with every fiber in your being, you really + truly hope you can. As we go start the year, a lot of couples may be having this exact conversation. “I hope this is our year.” “Me too.” It can be really hard to not know what the future has in store for you + the plan you have for building your family. My heart goes out to all of the couples who are currently struggling to receive + are hoping that this month (or this year) is the year they become “mom + dad.” You’re not alone in this + if you need a friend to talk to, please know that my DMs are always open. “Caer Ibormeith” (2026) Oil, gold pigment on panel In Celtic mythology Caer Ibormeith is a goddess of sleep, dreams and prophecy. As a shapeshifter and “liminal being,” she bridges the gap between the conscious world and the spirit realm. She is a daughter of a faery prince and one of the Tuatha de Dannan, the “people of the goddess Danu”. She belongs the the Otherworld of the fae, an existence beyond the linear timeframe of humans. Her name Ibormeith roughly translates to yew berry or shapely yew berry. Bound by enchantment, she alternates her form every year on the Celtic New Year (Samhain), spending one year as a human and the next as a swan. Caer Ibormeith first appeared to the love god Aengus Óg, (also god of poetic inspiration, youth and beauty), in a dream that lasted a year, serving as a guiding vision that led him on a quest to find her. Aengus was only permitted to marry her if he could identify her in her swan form among 150 identical maidens transformed into swans. Aengus found Caer Ibormeith among 150 chained swans by calling out to her, then transforming into a swan himself. Many of the magical characters, places and objects in Celtic mythology carry these nuanced and complex identities. In the parallel universe of the Otherworld, entities are often non- binary. Caer Ibormeith is neither human or swan but both at the same time. In Quantum physics a qubit is a quantum bit that can be a zero and a one at the same time, including everything in between. This is called superposition.
