We have been celebrating two rescue anniversaries over the past few days. Bumi and Jelapat both joined us in June 2016. And what a journey it has been for the two since their arrival 10 years ago! Tiny Bumi was so weak he could barely open his eyes. But with care and perseverance, he has grown into a strong, brave, and mischievous young orangutan. Bumi loves climbing tall trees, swinging from vines, and snacking on his favourite fruits, especially bananas and melons. Now in the pre-release stage on Bangamat Island, Bumi continues to refine his forest skills to help him thrive independently. Jelapat's story is one of similar tragedy. He was being kept in a village in Central Kalimantan when the BOS Foundation rescued him at 1.5 years old. A resident had found him six months earlier, alone and weak, by a riverbank. Forest fires had devastated the area at the time, and sadly, we believe his mother had either perished in the fires or was intentionally killed. The resident took the baby home and named him Jelapat. He was kept in a small cage by the side of a busy road, dressed in baby clothes and fed leftover rice and side dishes. Today, Jelapat's growing independence seems to be developing at the same rate as his strategic nature, as he conquers the final stage of his rehabilitation journey on Badak Kecil Pre-Release Island. Spain is leading Europe's agrivoltaic revolution — combining solar panels with olive groves, vineyards, and wheat fields on the same land. Spain's solar industry has faced growing land use pressure. The vast flat plains of Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, and Andalusia that make ideal solar sites are also some of Spain's most productive agricultural regions. Communities and farmers who have supported renewable energy development are increasingly concerned about the conversion of productive agricultural land to exclusive solar use. Agrivoltaic systems — where solar panels and agriculture coexist on the same land — are Spain's answer. Spanish agrivoltaic research programs at the University of Córdoba and the CSIC Institute of Natural Resources have demonstrated that many traditional Spanish crops benefit from the partial shade of elevated solar panels during summer heat. Olive trees, grapevines, and lavender all show reduced heat stress, lower irrigation requirements, and comparable or improved yields when grown beneath elevated solar arrays. Iberdrola is supporting agrivoltaic development through pilot programs and partnerships with agricultural cooperatives. Pilot projects like the Winesolar initiative in Spanish vineyards integrate intelligent tracking systems that provide crops protection during heat waves while generating renewable energy. The cooperative model ensures that the economic benefits of solar energy and agrivoltaic innovation remain with local farming communities. Spain's National Energy and Climate Plan now supports agrivoltaics, with policy updates in 2025 making agrivoltaic systems eligible for agricultural subsidies and support. Recognition of agrivoltaics as a specific category addresses the land use conflicts that threaten social acceptance of further solar expansion.
