While we are waiting for the new Touchscreen MacBook Pro Let me tell you a story... When I was your age, Macs had a startup chime. 10 years ago today, the first report revealed Apple had removed the iconic startup chime from the MacBook Pro, ending a 32-year tradition....😡 Wait what? Yes it was true... the 2016 MacBook Pro did NOT have the startup chime when you started it up. Every single Mac since the very first 128k Macintosh introduced in 1984 had a startup sound. The ONLY exception to this was the Server class products: Xserve and Xserve RAID. Even the Apple Network Server 500/700 had a startup chime. For 32 years, when you powered on a Mac you were greeted with the startup sound telling you things were good. Mac startup chime signaled that the Macintosh had successfully passed its initial hardware diagnostics. An example of this was an Apple Support article dated 6/23/97: "The startup chord, or boot tone, indicates this step is successful; this sound is in ROM" The startup sound was later confirmed in Apple Support article HT202768: "Mac models from early 2016 and earlier make a chime sound when they start up. Mac models from late 2016 and later don't have a startup chime.*" WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS APPLE????? I was not the only one that was asking this question. On November 2, 2016, Ars Technica published a review of the new 13" MacBook Pro by Andrew Cunningham. Apple provided this statement: “Apple tells us that the chime is missing because the laptop now automatically boots when it’s opened” Uh.... ok great but you can auto boot when it opens and still have the chime! Later on October 28, 2017, exactly one year after the startup sound removal report, the podcast Welcome to Macintosh released an interview with former Apple sound designer Jim Reekes. Jim created the famous startup c-major chord! it was first introduced on October 21, 1991, with the release of the Macintosh Quadra 700. During this interview Jim was asked about the removal of the startup sound. "It’s losing a friend. It’s moving out of the house that you grew up in.” He later described it as the end of an era and said the loss made him sad. Never fear though, as many users were able to figure out a way to manipulate the NVRAM settings to enable the startup sound again! You know where this is going.. Later, Apple’s firmware update squashed this pretty quickly. For years, users had no way of enabling the startup sound again. Then, out of no where on February 20, 2020 it was first reported that you could change this NVRAM setting: sudo nvram StartupMute=%00 and the startup chime was back! I wrote about it a day or so later and many users rejoiced in being able to turn the startup sound back on! But then on June 22, 2020, Apple officially restored the startup sound with the very first macOS Big Sur Developer Beta 1. You could now go into System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects > and select "Play sound on startup" The final nod to the startup sound happened on November 10, 2020, during Apple's “One more thing” hardware event. At exactly 42:34 during the promotional video you hear the words from 2 people: “The chime is back.” & "I love the [chime] sound" With that the Startup Sound was back... The End. Now on to the Touchscreen MacBook Pro!
