As more details emerge about the terrible tragedy of August 22, 2025, we mourn the life of 23-year-old Ukrainian Iryna Zarutska, murdered on her way home from work in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. My deepest condolences go to Iryna’s family. At such a moment, there must be space only for justice, not speculation. In 2022, Iryna fled Russia’s war in Ukraine with her mother, sister, and brother, after Russia struck again having gone unpunished for its aggression in 2014. When evil is not punished, it only repeats itself. I urge that justice be served. The same principle applies to Russia. Only through accountability can we achieve a just peace for Ukraine. Evil ignored will always rise again.
