Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi and eight members of her production team, including musicians, have reportedly been sentenced to 74 lashes after a concert performance streamed on her YouTube channel in December 2024. The case is linked to her performance of the patriotic song Az Khoone Javanane Vatan without wearing a hijab. According to court documents reviewed by rights groups and lawyers, the criminal court of Qom province also issued a two-year ban on leaving Iran and a two-year ban on artistic activities. I am proud to share that my photo ‘between sky and barbs’ is shortlisted in this years australiangeographic Nature Photographer of the year, hosted by southaustralianmuseum. This photo shows an endangered spectacled flying fox that I was called out to rescue from barbed wire. Sadly the call came too late and she had already passed when I arrived. Preventing barbed wire entanglement is something I am very passionate about, the injuries these animals sustain are just horrific. I spent years mitigating hot spot entanglement fences in SEQ and I’ve now started a mitigation project in the Cassowary Coast region. I’m hopeful this photo can bring more awareness to an issue that is very close to my heart. If you see any dead bats on barbed wire or rescue live bats, please upload your photos to my inaturalist project so we can track and mitigate hot spots. This marks the first confirmed detection of this devastating strain on mainland Australia. Around the world, H5 bird flu has caused catastrophic losses, killing millions of wild birds and pushing already vulnerable species closer to extinction. For Australia's birds, the stakes could not be higher. One in six Australian bird species is already threatened with extinction, with many populations already under pressure from habitat loss, climate change and other human impacts.
