This story is heartbreaking and jaw-dropping in equal measure. A woman in England, now in her 40s, was taken into a home at 16 and kept there for more than two decades, forced into domestic servitude, beaten, denied basic care, and robbed of her autonomy. What was supposed to be help turned into a life of oppression and cruelty that lasted 25 years.  Despite being entitled to state benefits, she lived in squalor and was denied freedom, food, health care, and dignity. At home she was forced to work tirelessly, often on her hands and knees, doing chores for the family that ‘took her in.’ The conditions were shocking — so poor that even neighbors described the home as filthy and overcrowded.  Her resilience is what stands out most. In 2021, after years of unimaginable treatment, she secretly reached out for help, which led to her rescue by authorities. Police found her malnourished and scared but alive — and now she’s rebuilding her life, pursuing college and new opportunities outside of that horrific environment.  The woman who kept her, a 56-year-old mother of ten, has been found guilty of modern-day slavery offenses including forced labor, false imprisonment, and assault. The judge described this case as having a “Dickensian” quality — and the conviction is a reminder that exploitation can hide in plain sight. New documents unsealed Thursday as a part of litigation brought by The Intercept and other news outlets reveal a critical discrepancy in Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s rationale for attempting to deport five international students and academics last year.⁠ ⁠ While Rubio and the Trump administration claimed in public that they wanted to deport students including Mahmoud Khalil and Yunseo Chung for supporting terrorism, internal Department of Homeland Security and State Department documents instead cite their advocacy for Palestinian rights in protests and writings — activities protected by the First Amendment.⁠ ⁠ Rubio and the administration have repeatedly conflated pro-Palestinian speech with support for Hamas, which the U.S. designates as a terrorist organization, but a DHS memo shows the government did not find any evidence that Chung or Khalil provided “material support” — meaning cash payment, property, or services — to any terror group.
