St. John the Evangelist Church, Évora. Founded in the late fifteenth century by Rodrigo de Melo, this Gothic nave was later enveloped by one of the most remarkable tile cycles in Portuguese art. António de Oliveira Bernardes transformed stone, light, and storytelling into a single visual experience. In Portugal, architecture is not always decorated by tiles. Sometimes it is completely consumed by them. Rodrigo de Melo, 1st Count of Olivença, was one of the leading noblemen of King Afonso V’s reign and the founder of this church. Through his descendants emerged the powerful House of Cadaval, the Álvares Pereira de Melo family, which still owns this extraordinary monument in Évora today. . . Igreja de São João Evangelista, Évora. Fundada no final do século XV por Dom Rodrigo de Melo, esta nave gótica acabaria por ser revestida, no século XVIII, por um dos mais impressionantes ciclos de azulejaria portuguesa. Os painéis de António de Oliveira Bernardes transformam pedra, luz e narrativa num único espaço. Em Portugal, por vezes, a arquitetura não é decorada pelos azulejos. É absorvida por eles.
